How To Prevent Hair Loss In Women

Most women consider their hair as their crowning glory. This is why having thinning hair is worrisome for many of them. The thing is, just like in men, hair loss in women is unavoidable as they age. In fact, 50% of women experience hair thinning by the time they reach 70. Fortunately, its onset doesn’t happen as early as it does in men. Moreover, hair loss in women rarely results in balding.

If you are concerned about hair thinning, below are some things you can do to address the problem.

See a trichologist or a dermatologist: Most people think that seeing a trichologist (hair and scalp specialist) or a dermatologist is only reserved for serious conditions. There is not true! These specialists can provide you with recommendations on how you can prevent the rapid progression of your hair loss as well as restore hair growth. They can also give advice on how you can keep your locks healthy. Furthermore, they can conduct necessary tests to determine if an underlying condition is causing you to lose your hair.

Keep in mind, when it comes to hair thinning and other hair-related problems, early treatment is integral in achieving favourable outcomes. So, if you’re noticing that your hair in certain portions of your scalp is sparse, seek professional help immediately.

Avoid hairstyles that can strain your hair: Frequently styling your hair in a tight ponytail, buns or braids may lead to hair loss. These tight hairstyles can strain your hair, causing them to break or get pulled. The repeated pulling may cause follicles to become inflamed and eventually degenerate, resulting in the slower hair growth and shorter and finer hairs. Worst, it can lead to permanent hair loss.

The thinning usually occurs along the hairline or near the temple. In most cases, the problem isn’t noticed until the hair loss is pronounced.

Observe proper hair and scalp care practices: As much as possible, use mild shampoos and other hair products. Also, make sure you don’t leave styling products such as gels too long as doing this can damage your locks. If you have dandruff or flaky scalp, treat it immediately. According to studies, having scalp problems can exacerbate hair fall.

Do not overdo treatments such as chemical straightening, bleaching, etc. Chemicals used in these processes can damage the shaft and weaken the hair. Avoid frequently using styling tools that subject your hair to heat such as blowers and curling irons. Exposure to high heat can make your hair brittle, making it more prone to breakage.

Eat a balanced diet: Nutritional deficiency can cause your hair to fall. So, have a healthy diet to get all the nutrients you need to keep your hair in tiptop condition. Eat enough protein as this is essential in keeping the hair strong. Make sure you get sufficient iron, too. When you don’t get enough iron, you may develop iron-deficiency anaemia, a condition which can cause hair loss. Other vitamins and minerals which can help revive thinning strands include zinc and vitamins B12, D and E.

Aside from eating food rich in the aforementioned nutrients, you may also take supplements if necessary. Just make sure you consult your doctor before taking them.
