Like most women, your hair is most probably very important to you. It is an integral part of your body image. This is why, you work hard to make it look beautiful all the time. You see to it that it gets the nourishment and care it requires to stay healthy.

Given how valuable your hair is to you, losing it is definitely one of the things you dread the most. Perhaps, just like everyone else, you are probably curious if there is something you can do to prevent or stop hair loss.

Can You Stop Hair Loss?

In some cases, hair loss can be stopped. There are also situations wherein losing hair is unavoidable. It all depends on what the cause of the hair loss is.

The most common cause of hair loss in women is androgenetic alopecia. Also called female-pattern hair loss, it leads to the widening of part and the thinning of hair. Fortunately, unlike in males, women rarely suffer from balding.

Female-pattern hair loss is hereditary. Its onset usually happens by the age of 40 or 50 or when menopause starts. Sadly, there is no escaping female-pattern hair loss. However, there are things which can help you prevent it from progressing quickly or delay its onset. There are also medications and hair products which promote hair growth. Furthermore, observing proper hair care practices can keep your locks healthy. With strong hair, breakages, which can exacerbate the problem, can be minimised.

Hair loss in women is not just because of genetics. It can also be due to underlying medical conditions. Thyroid disorders like hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism may result in excessive hair fall. Typically, once the thyroid problem is treated, the hair grows back. Similarly, if your hair loss is due to scalp conditions like seborrheic dermatitis and tinea capitis, addressing these problems is the key to stopping your locks from falling.

Meanwhile, there are conditions that cause hair loss which are not curable. Examples of these are alopecia areata and alopecia universalis. While there is currently no cure for these hair loss conditions, there are treatments which can stop or slow down hair loss and restore hair on the affected areas. The success rates vary for these treatments. It is not unusual for some sufferers to grow a head of hair, especially for those with alopecia areata. However, the hair may again fall out unexpectedly.

Hair loss due to styling, specifically tight ponytails or braids, can be reversed. All you need to do is to refrain from sporting these tight hairstyles. Using strengthening products may also benefit your locks. In addition, your dermatologist may recommend medications to hasten the growth of hair.

While hair loss can be stopped in some cases, it is important to note that, when scarring of the follicles occurs, the problem can become severe and irreversible. For example, when traction alopecia is not immediately addressed, the repeated pulling of the hair may eventually lead to permanent hair loss. Hence, it is important that you consult specialists immediately to prevent the problem from escalating.

Experiencing hair loss can be worrisome and even nerve-racking. But it is not a problem without a solution. If you address it early, you can successfully combat it. So, when you notice excessive hair shedding, do not hesitate to visit a trichologist or dermatologist ASAP. A professional hair and scalp specialist can diagnose the cause of the hair loss and come up with the appropriate treatment plan for you.
